Maple Creek Watershed Streamkeepers Society is a stewardship group dedicated to encourage all community members to protect, rehabilitate and restore the natural environment, including Maple Creek, and the services it provides us.
Maple Creek is a small but important tributary of the Coquitlam River. It flows north to south through Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, and drains a watershed approximately 192 ha. It is located on the right bank of the Coquitlam River downstream of the Coquitlam River Park. It is used by Coho, Chum, Steelhead, Cutthroat, Chinook, Pink and Sockeye salmon, in addition to remnant Brook Trout introduced from Lafarge Lake. In addition to these fish, many species of aquatic plants and insects can be found in the tributary.
Over the years Maple Creek has endured poor stream quality, riparian encroachment, lack of riparian cover, low summer stream flow and barriers to fish passage. Maple Creek Streamkeepers work to mitigate these challenges by partnering with the City, Kwikwetlem First Nations, and other stewardship groups to host invasive species pulls, native species planting, invertebrate studies and water quality testing. This work will improve stream health for fish and invertebrates and ensure proper riparian cover.
